Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a physician to join PROP?
No, other health professionals and lay people are welcome to join PROP. Membership is open to anyone with an interest promoting more cautious prescribing and in bringing the opioid crisis to an end.

Does PROP want to ban opioids?
Absolutely not. We believe that opioids are an extremely important class of medication, especially when used to ease suffering at the end of life and when used short-term for severe acute pain.

Does PROP want to ban the use of opioids for chronic non-cancer pain?
No. We do not support legal constraints on clinical decision-making. We believe that opioid prescribing can be reduced by providing prescribers and the public with accurate information about opioid risks and benefits.

Does PROP want to stop drug companies from promoting long-term opioids for chronic non-cancer pain?
Yes!

Where does PROP receive its funding?
PROP’s funding comes from Phoenix House, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and from individual donations. PROP does not accept funding from pharmaceutical companies or medical device manufacturers.
